‘We’ve tested every electric car in the UK and this is the one you should buy’

A group of car experts from a renowned motoring publication have come together to decide which is the best electric vehicle on sale in the UK

In the past two decades, electric cars have skyrocketed in popularity as more and more drivers are choosing to ditch their petrol and diesel cars.

Whilst electric cars were forsaken in the early days of motoring, in the 2020s they are now a force to be reckoned with as more manufacturers have embraced them for environmental reasons.

Today, almost every brand makes at least one electric car, or if they don’t, they build at least one with a hybrid component. To that end, car reviewers at AutoExpress have compiled a list of the 10 best electric cars on sale in the UK, before coming to a verdict on which is the best one to buy.

Despite strong competition from the likes of Fiat, Renault, Kia, and Tesla, it was the Czech marque Skoda that came out on top with their Elroq SUV.

Speaking about why the car had won, the testers at AutoExpress said that Skoda had done such a brilliant job with the vehicle, they had named it their “overall Car of the Year at the 2025 New Car Awards”.

They praised: “A sophisticated cabin, a claimed range of up to 360 miles, quick charging speeds of up to 175kW and competitive pricing from less than £32,000 make the Elroq our favourite electric vehicle on sale.

“It’s a top choice for young families. On the road, the Elroq feels substantial but not unwieldy, has a mature ride that doesn’t fall apart in corners, and it’s very easy to control the throttle.”

This isn’t the first time the Skoda Elroq has pleased the testers at the publication. Earlier this year, they explained why it had been chosen as their car of the year.

They said: “In the end, however, we chose the car which, try as we might, we struggled to find any obvious faults with – and that all-round strength sealed its position.

“Everything we’ve come to expect and love from a Skoda is right here, with value for money at the forefront of everything it does.”

Other contenders that came close to toppling the Skoda included a trio from European manufacturers Renault and Fiat, with the Renaults 5 and 4 coming in second and fourth, and the Fiat Grande Panda a strong third.

In fact, the Fiat Grande Panda, available in both hybrid and electric form, came out on top in the small car category.

Speaking about its electric variant, the reviewers remarked: “It’s simple, durable, and affordable. Our tests have shown it to be very efficient at slow speeds and in town, and we saw a real-world range of around 145 miles on a route that was evenly split between urban, country roads, and motorways.”
