A woman tragically lost her life after a fall on an escalator at a shopping centre, a coroner’s court heard.

The victim, who was a pensioner, suffered uncontrollable bleeding.

The inquest into the death of 90-year-old Margaret Rose Harris, held at Swansea’s Guildhall, revealed that she died from external bleeding due to traumatic lacerations to her right leg.

The incident occurred on an escalator at WH Smith within the Quadrant Shopping Centre in Swansea city centre.

The once dominant high street force has accelerated its closures this year, disappearing from many town and city streets after being sold for £76 million.

The pensioner’s deadly accident took place on Tuesday, January 21, earlier this year.

The court heard that common medication could have contributed to the deadly fall.

The inquest heard that Ms Harris, a retired administrator from Miers Street in St Thomas, had been taking apixaban and aspirin.

These medications likely exacerbated the continuous bleeding following the injury.

No faults were found with the escalator or its surrounding environment.

The official cause of death was listed as external bleeding, traumatic laceration of soft tissues of the right leg, and coronary atheroma, reports Wales Online.

Senior coroner Aled Gruffydd concluded that the death was accidental.
