Retired Hollywood star Jim Carrey revealed he “bought a lot of stuff” and ‘needs the money’ from his new Sonic movie, having also slashed the price on his LA mansion to make a sale
Retired actor Jim Carrey has admitted he took the third Sonic movie on because he ‘needs the money’, after he was reported to have dropped the price on the LA mansion he’s selling by $10 million.
The Truman Show star, 62, revealed he was quitting showbiz in 2022, stating he ‘has enough’, with roles in the likes of The Mask, Liar Liar, Dumb and Dumber, Ace Ventura, and The Grinch all to his name. But in February this year it was announced he would return to his role as mad scientist Dr Robotnik, despite previously confirming that Sonic 2 would be his final film.
The video game adaptation, which also stars Keanu Reeves, Idris Elba and Ben Schwartz, is out on December 20. It sees characters Sonic, Knuckles and Tails back together in the battle against a new enemy.
Shadow has new powers that seem to outmatch the gang’s in every way, with the group finding a new alliance to save the planet from Keanu Reeves’ character. Carrey spoke about his role and reason for taking it at the red carpet premiere in London on Monday, admitting he’s “bought a lot of stuff”.
He told the Associated Press: “I came back to this universe ’cause, first of all, I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch, and it’s just… it’s just… I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly.” Carrey added: “At the same time, it had heart, and that’s why I did it the first time. There was something beautiful about the heart of the piece. I hope it will bring families together and cure several diseases.”
But although his comment may have been said in jest, there could be an element of truth to Carrey’s remark, with his finances likely to be playing on his mind amid a series of price cuts as he tries to sell his home. Realtor.com says listed his five-bedroom estate in February 2023 for $28.9 million. It has since been cut FOUR times, by almost $10 million. Two months after it went up for sale initially, he requested it was reduced to $26.5 million, before reducing again to $23.95 million.
With little interest in the home at that price, he went down to $21.9 million in May 2024, but after four months, it seems he was still struggling. In September, it was cut once again, to $19.75 million, a staggering $10 million off the initial asking price.
Despite still set to make a $3.8 million profit, it looks as though it was either his realty woes or Sonic’s incredible script that lured him out of retirement. Speaking to Access Hollywood in 2022, Carrey had remarked: “Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.”
Carrey added: “I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint on canvas and I really love my spiritual life and I feel like — and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists — I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”
The Sonic movies could have been too much to turn down, with the first two proving to be one of the most illustrious projects of his career, having grossed $725 million worldwide.
