What Senne Lammens did at training will be music to ears of Man Utd fans

Manchester United signed Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp for £18.2million on deadline day and the 23-year-old Belgian goalkeeper has been working hard behind the scenes

Senne Lammens has already made a good impression in Manchester United training after joining the club on deadline day. Lammens arrived in a £18.2million transfer from Royal Antwerp as Ruben Amorim opted to twist in the goalkeeping department.

United have been blighted by mistakes in between the posts, with Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir struggling for consistency last season. Onana has been shipped out on loan to Trabzonspor this season, with Lammens arriving as a replacement.

Bayindir kept his place in the starting XI for the Manchester Derby on Sunday, but the 3-0 defeat did little to convince Amorim to stick with the Turkey international. Lammens is 23 and has only ever played club football in Belgium, but he has caught the eye of United’s veteran third-choice keeper Tom Heaton.

“It’s only been a few days training but he seems like a really good lad,” Heaton said on the Training Ground Guru podcast. “He’s calm but [has] a strong personality. His goalkeeping fundamentals are very impressive and I think I said that to him after a couple of days training.

“Twenty-three years old coming into Manchester United, first few days training and he’s been very impressive so far. I really like his goalkeeping fundamentals.”

Amorim stuck with Bayindir for the derby because he was reluctant to throw Lammens into such a big occasion on debut. “I believe in Altay he is ready to play. It’s a different league, a different country, a different ball,” he said. “So they will fight for the position. We are really pleased [with Lammens]. He is a goalkeeper with a lot of potential.

“We are in a moment where the goalkeeper needs to be really strong and have a lot of experience, but we also have to look at the present, with a focus on the future, so it’s a bit of both. He will be ready.”

Despite missing out, Lammens is delighted to have touched down in Manchester. “This is my dream move,” he told MUTV after signing. ”When I was five, United was at the height of football and you keep in your memory how big Manchester United is, so, when I heard they were interested, it was like a childhood dream.

“I remember being a kid, Manchester United winning the Champions League and winning the league, and also [I want] to help the team get to a level that you can compete for a title again and to play in the Champions League again.

“That’s also one of my biggest points, that I want to grow with the team and go up to the heights that used to be Manchester United. It’s one of the biggest clubs in the world and the Premier League is the biggest competition in the world.”
