What Tottenham owner thinks of Daniel Levy exit as ex-Arsenal chief’s role emerges

Daniel Levy has stepped down as Tottenham’s chairman with the club’s succession already underway with a former Arsenal chief after a number of appointments in recent months

Tottenham Hotspur are entering a new era after Daniel Levy stepped down from his role of executive chairman, with the succession plan already underway. And the club’s majority owners, the Lewis family – whose trust owns the majority of ENIC – want to see ‘more wins, more often’ as Spurs make changes.

Levy brings to an end a 25-year spell with the north London club and is largely responsible for driving the club’s move to the Tottenham Hotspur stadium. But to the frustration of many, only two trophies have been won during Levy’s time at the club: the League Cup in 2008 and the Europa League last term.

Success appears firmly on the minds of those in the Tottenham hierarchy. Spurs announced the appointment of former Arsenal chief Vinai Venkatesham as their new CEO in April as part of succession planning.

The Lilywhites’ plans have also seen Thomas Frank replace Ange Postecoglou as men’s first team boss and Peter Charrington join the board before being named Non-Executive Chairman in the wake of Levy’s exit. And the Lewis family have thrust their support behind the new set-up, with the suggestion the recent changes are a result of an ambition to win.

Interestingly, the appointment of former Arsenal chief Venkatesham was referenced. “Generations of the Lewis family support this special football club and they want what the fans want – more wins more often,” said a source close to the family.

“This is why you have seen recent changes, new leadership and a fresh approach. In Vinai, Thomas and Peter Charrington, they believe they are backing the right team to deliver on this. This is a new era.”

This ambition was echoed in the club’s first statement as Charrington described the period as a new era of leadership. “I am very honoured to become Non-Executive Chairman of this extraordinary Club and, on behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Daniel and his family for their commitment and loyalty to the Club over so many years,” he said.

“This is a new era of leadership for the club, on and off the pitch. I do recognise there has been a lot of change in recent months as we put in place new foundations for the future. We are now fully focused on stability and empowering our talented people across the Club, led by Vinai and his executive team.”

While Levy departs, there are no changes to the ownership or shareholder structure of the club. The 63-year-old 29.88 per cent of the share capital of ENIC which owns 86.91 per cent.

Following his exit, Levy said: “I am incredibly proud of the work I have done together with the executive team and all our employees. We have built this club into a global heavyweight competing at the highest level. More than that, we have built a community. I was lucky enough to work with some of the greatest people in this sport, from the team at Lilywhite House and Hotspur Way to all the players and managers over the years.

“I wish to thank all the fans that have supported me over the years. It hasn’t always been an easy journey but significant progress has been made. I will continue to support this club passionately.”
