WhatsApp down: Users unable to send messages and connect to app amid online outage

By staff12 April 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

A major outage has hit WhatsApp with thousands of people having difficulty using the messenger application this afternoon around the world and there is a sudden spike in cases now in the UK

Brits have reported a sudden major WhatsApp outage with a spike in people unable to send or receive messages this afternoon.

The Meta-owned social media giant is down for thousands of users globally, according to outage tracking website Downdetector. Many have reported having difficulty in uploading data and sending messages with a map of the UK showing that most of the cases are in London but there are also sizeable numbers with issues in the northwest of England and the Glasgow area.

Downdetector statistics for the UK showed that 49% of people who reported problems had them when trying to sending messages. While 46% had difficulty with the app and a further 4% where struggling to use the voice facility on WhatsApp.

There are currently more than 100 people who are reporting problems in the UK compared to just six an hour ago. And the problem is not just nationwide with people telling of having issues globally.

WhatsApp services have been affected by a disruption, leaving hundreds of users unable to connect, send messages across both the mobile application and the web-based platform around the world. In India alone, more than 900 reports have logged, with more than 90% of these citing issues with sending messages.

The remaining reports indicated server connection problems and general app malfunctions. Globally thousands of users have reported similar issues. Many people have taken to social media also to report their problems with one person writing: “Cannot send messages to group.. whats app down?”

Another person similarly wrote on X: “Is WhatsApp down ? I have been trying to upload the status but it couldn’t.” Some users mentioned difficulties while accessing Facebook and Instagram, which are also owned by Meta.

This is not the first time this year that WhatsApp has had a significant outage and in February at least 68,000 users of the application along with Facebook Messenger, Facebook and TikTok were impacted.

Website Downdetector showed large spikes for WhatApp in particular, with people saying they had been affected on February 28. On that occasion in the UK a map showed that most of the affected WhatsApp users were in London but also many people were unable to use the application in Manchester and Glasgow.
