Wimbledon day three schedule: Emma Raducanu has tough test as British star plays Carlos Alcaraz

British No.1 Emma Raducanu will headline Centre Court on the third day of Wimbledon, with Oliver Tarvet taking on Carlos Alcaraz, while Cameron Norrie and Katie Boulter also in action

Emma Raducanu will take on a former Wimbledon champion on a Wednesday that is packed full of exciting matches in SW19.

Raducanu overcame Mimi Xu in straight sets on Monday to move into the second round at Wimbledon and has a tough assignment in front of the home crowd.

She faces 2023 champion Marketa Vondrousova in the final match of the day on Centre Court after receiving a tough draw. The British No.1 knows how difficult an opponent Vondrousova can be, having lost in her previous two matches against the Czech.

However, Raducanu did triumph in their only previous match at Wimbledon, winning in straight sets back in 2021.

“It will be a really difficult match – obviously she has won Wimbledon,” Raducanu said. “[She’s an] amazing grass court player, in general. I think it’s going to be a really difficult match. I’m going to need to play very well to get over the line.”

Reflecting on her win over Vondrousova in 2021, Raducanu added: “I remember I played really good tennis. I remember I played one of the best matches I’ve played. I was so aggressive, took the ball on.

“Obviously since she’s won the Wimbledon title and had a lot more success on grass. I remember that was a big change, a big turning point for me. I’m looking forward, again, to have the opportunity to be in the second round. I’m grateful for that.”

The 2022 US Open champion is not looking past Vondrousova yet, but she is likely to get another difficult opponent if she does triumph in the form of Aryna Sabalenka.

The world No.1 plays Marie Bouzkova in the first match at 1.30pm on Centre Court on Wednesday. Sabalenka breezed past qualifier Carson Branstine in the opening round and is one of the favourites for the title after suffering defeat in the French Open final against Coco Gauff.

After the Belarusian will come the biggest match of Oliver Tarvet’s life, against defending champion Carlos Alcaraz on Centre Court. The British qualifier produced a stunning performance to beat Leandro Riedi on Monday and received a huge tie as a prize.

The world No.733, who won three qualifying matches to get into the main draw, will play world No.2 Alcaraz in the middle slot. “You never know what can happen in tennis,” he said. “I’m quietly confident that I can win against anyone.

“Alcaraz isn’t an exception to that. Obviously, he’s done an incredible amount in the tennis world. He’s a difficult guy not to respect. But yeah, just go out there and try and treat it like another match.”

Cameron Norrie opens the day on Court One against American 12th seed Frances Tiafoe before British No.2 Katie Boulter plays Argentina’s Solana Sierra. Taylor Fritz’s reward for coming through a five-setter against the big-serving Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard is a match against Canada’s Gabriel Diallo, which is the final scheduled match on Court One.
