Woman buys £20 dress from thrift store and people can’t get over true value

A woman was left ‘shaking’ when she was shopping in a thrift store after she spotted a ‘piece of history’ and knew that she had to buy it, not realising it’s true worth

It’s the best feeling bagging a bargain and realising that it’s worth so much more than you could’ve anticipated. And one woman was left “shaking” when she spotted a designer brand in the charity shop, getting so excited about what she’d found for such a cheap price. Vanessa Nagel, who posts on TikTok as @mycuteassfinds was likely extremely excited about the real worth of the dress as well.

“I don’t know what to say. I’m shaking. I don’t think, I know that we just found a Gucci dress, and I believe it’s Gucci x Tom Ford, specifically 1998,” she gushed, specifying that she’d found this gem at the thrift store.

When she found the dress, she couldn’t stop saying “Oh my god” as she turned the camera around to focus on the dress.

The dress was a plain ‘little black dress,’ but it was elevated with leather straps and Gucci buckles, making it look significantly fancier. Vanessa then looked at the tag, which confirmed that the size 12 dress was indeed Gucci.

The dress stated on the label that it needed to be professionally dry cleaned and that it was made in Italy.

The high-neck, drop-back dress looked elegant on the hanger – and it would look even more amazing on someone who had a fancy event to go to.

According to Newsweek, Vanessa paid just $25.99 (£19.28) for the designer dress. And apparently, she knew she’d found a “piece of history” when she clocked it.

There are versions of this dress selling secondhand now online for $4,200 (£3,114.46).

“It’s not just about finding designer; it’s about finding quality items made from good fabrics that make you feel your best in a sustainable way,” she told them.

Other notable thrift shop purchases she’d made include a stunning Barbie Miu Miu dress and a Balenciaga city bag.

The reaction to her finding the dress was mixed, with some saying they didn’t understand.

One criticised: “I do not understand designer fashion…like, it’s just a black dress.”

Meanwhile, another argued: “The fit, stitchings, little Details, fabrics – there‘s a lot of differences to this dress and the ones you can buy at Zara”.

However, a woman praised her for being able to spot the dress as being special. They described the garment as “nondescript,” but noted it’s a “great find”.

Why is shopping in charity shops good for finding designer brands?

Thrift store shopping is a great way to find designer pieces because you can often discover high-quality, unique items at a fraction of their original cost.

Many people donate clothing and accessories that are still in excellent condition, including luxury brands, either because they no longer want them or are making room for new items.

Thrift stores receive a constant influx of new inventory, which means there’s always a chance to find hidden gems if you visit regularly.

Additionally, shopping secondhand is more sustainable, as it extends the life of garments and reduces waste.

For those seeking designer pieces, thrift stores offer the thrill of the hunt and the possibility of scoring rare or vintage items that may no longer be available in traditional retail stores.

So what are you waiting for? Get bargain hunting!
