Emergency services were called to the Try Dowr JD Wetherspoons pub in Lemon Quay, Truto, at 1.50pm on Saturday after a woman collapsed. She was pronounced dead at the scene

A woman has died after collapsing inside a Wetherspoon pub in Cornwall.

Emergency services were called to the Try Dowr JD Wetherspoons pub in Lemon Quay, Truro, at 1.50pm on Saturday after a woman collapsed. Eyewitnesses said the incident happened towards the back of the pub, as they described how the woman had “hit the decks” near a group of young women.

Devon and Cornwall Police have now confirmed that the woman who passed away was in her 70s. A spokesperson for the force said that CPR was given to the woman by members of the public who came to help them by paramedics who took over.

However, the woman, who has yet to be named, could not be revived and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Her death is not believed to be suspicious, Cornwall Live reported.

The police spokesperson said: “We were called to Lemon Quay, Truro, at around 1.50pm on Saturday 1 March where the ambulance service were responding to a suspected medical episode. A woman in her 70s was given emergency treatment but was confirmed deceased at the scene.

“Her next of kin have been informed. The death is not believed to be suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.” Punters were asked to leave the pub just before 2pm.

On Tuesday, a man died after collapsing inside a different Wetherspoon pub – The Watch Maker pub on Eccleston Street in Prescot, Merseyside. The man, in his 70s, was treated by paramedics at the scene before being rushed to hospital. A spokesperson for JD Wetherspoon said managers of the pub called for an ambulance after the man collapsed in the access toilets.

They added a fellow customer also saw what was happening and performed CPR until paramedics arrived. The pub said it has since been informed the man died following the incident, the Liverpool Echo reported. A spokesperson for the pub chain added: “The pub was closed to allow managers to deal with the incident and to allow the ambulance service to work unhindered as it was in a customer area.”

They also said “due to the upset” the incident caused, the decision was made to close the pub for the rest of the evening “to allow the team to regroup.” It reopened on Wednesday morning.
