People were concerned after a woman, who is obsessed with oysters, ordered a whopping 80 for her lunch earlier this week and shocked a restaurant worker. But the bill was the most flabbegasting
A woman left people open-mouthed by ordering 80 oysters at a restaurant and tucking into them in one sitting. Plus, people can’t believe the price she paid.
We have all seen it in films and on TV shows where a posh character orders oysters and Champagne at a bar or restaurant. They immediately ooze sophistication and wealth. The shellfish are enjoyed by tipping them into your mouth.
It’s no secret oysters are pretty pricey – and this is because of the intensive farming process and high demand. Typically for a dozen of them, you will pay between £20 and £50 in a fancy restaurant. The price depends on the quality of the oysters.
However, one oyster-obsessed woman, who was not worried about the price, shocked a waiter recently when she asked for 80 oysters for lunch. In a viral video, which has raked in over 13 million views, she decided to see if she could finish them all in one sitting.
There are many health benefits to eating oysters; according to the NHS they are good sources of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids. Plus, they are particularly high in vitamin B12, zinc, iron, and selenium, according to North Coast Seafoods. The other great thing about oysters is that they are low in calories. So that’s why viral food reviewer Georgina has no problem ordering them all the time.
The food and cooking lover, who shares her reviews and solo experiences online, visited the Wright Brothers in South Kensington, London, earlier this week. She discovered that between Monday and Friday, as well as on Sundays, she can get oysters for £1 each at the eatery.
In her video, she can be seen telling the waiter: “I think I’m ready to order, can I get 80 oysters please.” The stunned waiter said: “80 oysters”, to which Georgina said, “yes 80 please”.
With mignonette sauce, tabasco and lemon slices in her hand, Georgina got to work in clearing the huge feast. She described the seafood as “amazing” – and managed to polish off the whole lot.
She even joked to the waiter: “I could have eaten more if I hadn’t had breakfast”. And in response, he said it was “impressive”.
In the comments section, people were equally as shocked by the mega meal. Many couldn’t believe Georgina got so many oysters for just £80 – with some even fearing the restaurant would struggle to make a profit.
One said: “I once worked at an oyster bar and we had to shuck the oysters ourselves. If you had ordered this from me I’d have cried and/or walked out.”
And restaurant owner added: “As a restaurant owner I’d decline. They are loosing money unless you’re buying wine / starter and main after.”
Is it safe to eat raw oysters?
Some feared for Georgina’s health. One concerned commenter remarked: “Oysters can be so dangerous. I work for the health dept and would never personally eat a single raw oyster. You just ever know.”
Although oysters clearly offer impressive health benefits, there are some potential concerns – especially when consuming them raw. The shellfish can harbour harmful bacteria like Vibrio and viruses, potentially leading to food poisoning, which can cause serious illness, including flesh-eating infections.
The Gov Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science reports: “There is something special about oysters too; nowadays they shout luxury and indulgence, often accompanied by a glass of Champagne or two. Nobody wants that special event to be followed by a nasty bout of gastroenteritis.
“It is estimated that over 13 million oyster meals are served in the UK annually, many of them consumed raw, so whilst the odds of contracting norovirus from eating raw oysters are relatively low, anyone who has ever suffered with the virus will know just how unpleasant it is.”
Typically, eating a dozen or less oysters in one sitting is advised by experts.
