A woman has revealed her ‘purchase of the year’ on social media, and people are ‘instantly sold’ as it’s claimed to save you a small fortune on your heating bill

As the UK braces for a significant drop in temperatures, many households are grappling with the decision to turn on their heating due to the associated costs.

With Christmas around the corner, some are opting to save money for presents by resorting to hooded blankets, bed socks, and hot water bottles.

While these may offer temporary relief, they aren’t seen as long-term solutions. Consequently, people are sharing their best cost-saving tips on social media, calculating potential savings from making certain changes.

TikTok user @vcw_19 has sworn off “no more boosting the heating” thanks to a product she highly recommends. So, what’s this life-changing item? It’s a simple electric blanket.

She confessed to feeling “so cold” lately that she had been turning up the heat, especially in a room at the back of her house that doesn’t get much sunlight during winter. Worried about her heating bill, she was relieved not to “have to touch the heating” thanks to her electric blanket.

The woman mentioned prices vary, and she paid £17 for hers, but “hates being cold” and felt the purchase was necessary. She declared: “I think this is probably the purchase of the year for me,” and encouraged others who expressed interest in getting one to go ahead and treat themselves.

Cranking up the thermostat day and night isn’t keeping everyone toasty – one nippy Brit revealed: “I need one of these; my heating is blasting all day and night; it’s so cold,” venting their frustration.

The TikTok user replied: “I looked up that heating costs an average of £1.69 per hour. Electric blankets are roughly 6p per hour. That’s a huge saving!”

Reddit users are buzzing with tips on staying warm without burning cash. Over at the ‘Personal Finance’ forum, someone smartly pointed out: “Heat the person not the room,” for peak efficiency, rather than heating up empty space.

Meanwhile, on the ‘Frugal’ thread, one happy customer lauds the dreamland intelliheat, exclaiming: “I purchased the dreamland intelliheat this year after two years of umming and ahhing about the cost and feeling miserable all winter. I chose the faux husky fur model as I work from home and wanted a heated option I could use around my whole house not just in bed and it is by far the best item I have purchased for my house.”

They gushed about its snug value, even sans heat: “It is thick and warm even without the heat setting on. I have not yet had to go past setting 3. And according to my smart meter, it costs 0.01p an hour to run. My gas is around £1 every 20 minutes while getting up to temperature, and as I live in a damp rented terrace, it’s forever clicking back on.”

This delighted buyer concludes with zero buyer’s remorse: “I have no regrets about my purchase and would highly recommend to someone who wants to heat the person not the property. I am leaving upstairs windows open for the damp/mould and have a dehumidifier for when this isn’t possible and assisting with laundry drying time.”

Another shared their experience, writing: “I think it’s definitely worth getting. Personally I prefer a heated mattress topper (the kind that is like a fitted sheet) over an electric blanket with strings or straps – those are a little cheaper, but it’s well worth upgrading to the mattress topper kind and not much more money. The ones with strings or straps never stay in place properly.”
