A woman, who shares cleaning and home decor tips on Instagram, has shared a clever hack to remove rust from metal items – and it requires just two household items
A savvy woman has discovered a brilliant and cost-effective method to remove stubborn rust from metal furniture.
Rust is unsightly, but it doesn’t necessarily mean the item is destined for the rubbish heap. Rust typically forms on metal if it’s not properly maintained, protected, or cleaned.
With a bit of effort, your rusty metal piece could look brand new in no time. Content creator Melissa, who enjoys transforming her discarded items into treasures, is an expert at using smart hacks to rejuvenate items. Her latest trick involves a household item that most of us have at home, costing less than £2.
She simply uses some water and tin foil. Melissa posted a video clip on Instagram showing how she used a crumpled piece of tin foil to scrub the legs of a rusty wicker chair, effectively removing the rust instantly.
The video garnered over nine million views and left viewers amazed. Melissa explained: “Did you know you can easily remove rust with aluminium foil and water? Yes, that’s it. All you need to do is crumple up a piece of aluminium foil, dip it in water, and scrub away! It comes right off.” Tin foil costs just £1.40 at Tesco and £1.75 at Sainsbury’s.
Thousands were quick to share their reactions to the hack. One person who tried the cleaning technique said: “We got a vintage chrome lamp a year ago with a gorgeous shape but some rust spots I couldn’t figure out how to remove, and after 15 minutes and some scrubbing it’s so shiny I could use it as a makeup mirror!”
Another penned: “My late father-in-law had a beach chair and I’ve been wanting to refurbish it for my partner to continue using, but it is super rusted! I’m trying this! Thanks for sharing.”
“I’ve been influenced, it actually does work,” another viewer admitted. “This worked beautifully,” chimed in someone else. A different user exclaimed: “Wow! You’ve changed my life!”
