World’s most dangerous city with 300 murders a year is beautiful seaside spot

By staff13 May 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Los Cabos, a resort city on the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, is one of the most dangerous cities in the world, with a murder rate of 111.3 per 100,000 people

Los Cabos, renowned for its stunning beaches, top-notch resorts, and lively nightlife, is a favourite holiday spot in Mexico. However, beneath the picturesque landscape lies a disturbing truth: Los Cabos records one of the highest murder rates globally, with around 300 homicides annually.

Encompassing the twin cities of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, Los Cabos has long been admired for its beautiful coastline. It offers tourists a plethora of activities, from whale watching to deep-sea fishing and snorkelling. Visitors from the United States and worldwide are attracted by the pleasant climate, convenient flight connections, and luxurious lodgings.

Yet, while the sandy beaches and vibrant nightlife make Los Cabos an ideal holiday destination, the region’s murder rate paints a different picture. With 111.3 deaths per 100,000 people, Los Cabos sadly ranks among the world’s most dangerous cities.

Much of this violence is linked to drug-related crimes and gang conflicts, which have escalated in recent years. Despite the high crime rate, Los Cabos continues to attract millions of tourists each year.

The local tourism industry has made significant efforts to ensure visitor safety, including dedicated tourist police forces, heightened security at major resorts, and increased surveillance in areas popular with tourists.

These measures have largely succeeded in keeping the violence away from tourist hotspots, ensuring visitors can enjoy a relatively safe holiday experience.

Los Cabos draws travellers with its stunning natural beauty, thrilling adventure activities, and exquisite dining, reports the Express.

The city’s beaches rank among Mexico’s finest, with several awarded Blue Flag status for their environmental standards and cleanliness.

Los Cabos also boasts a lively food scene, with authentic Mexican cuisine and fresh seafood attracting food enthusiasts from around the globe.

While Los Cabos remains a favoured tourist spot, local authorities recognise the need to tackle the root causes of the high crime rate.

Initiatives to curb drug-related violence and gang activity are ongoing, and tourism officials are striving to preserve a safe environment for visitors.

As Los Cabos grapples with these issues, tourists are advised to stay vigilant, keep abreast of local conditions, and adhere to safety guidelines provided by their hotels and tour operators.
