Wrexham star loved by Ryan Reynolds furious with his boss as he all but confirms exit

By staff16 June 2025No Comments5 Mins Read

Paul Mullin has been a key figure for Wrexham since joining the club in 2021, but the striker has admitted to being left frustrated at his lack of game time this season

Wrexham ace Paul Mullin has hinted at a potential exit from the club after voicing his frustration over being left out in the cold. The striker has been a key figure for the Red Dragons since his arrival in July 2021, notching 110 goals in 172 appearances.

However, he experienced a slump in form in League One this season, hitting the back of the net only three times after undergoing back surgery last summer. Despite being a fan favourite and beloved by celebrity co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Mullin found himself out of the squad completely in the league from the end of January onwards.

The decision coincided with manager Phil Parkinson’s signing of forwards Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez. Speculation about Mullin’s future has been rife since April after Wrexham secured promotion to the Championship.

Mullin shared his heartfelt desire to play in the second tier in an emotional interview included in the latest instalment of the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ docuseries. But, in a frank chat recorded before the season’s end, he indicated his chances were pretty slim.

He said: “Just to play one game in the Championship with Wrexham would be worth absolutely everything. It would be the icing on the cake for this story and who knows where it could end.

“I’ve enjoyed every minute here, and if we could get to the Championship, then that’d be phenomenal. From a personal point of view, I don’t think I’ll have any part to play in it from here on in.”

Despite being tied to Wrexham until 2027, reports claim that Mullin may depart on a free transfer this summer after finding himself sidelined. Wigan Athletic are said to be one of the clubs interested in signing him.

In a further heartfelt admission on the documentary, Mullin opened up about his psychological battle and feeling a sense of injustice after being hampered by his back injury.

“I let that get to me, to be honest, from where I’ve been to then only being allowed to play four games and finding myself being left out of the team,” he said. “I resented it and I carried that for weeks because I felt it was unjust.

“I think I’m more annoyed now. It’s the annoyance of training every single day, doing everything I can, and looking back on everything I’ve done.

“I feel like I was a main part of why we got into this situation, and then I’m not being allowed the platform to get back there, or the opportunity to go and do it again. It’s difficult. I don’t know what’s caused him [Parkinson] to trust me less, but he clearly does.”

He later added: “I’ve let go of all resentment and anger. Going forward, the only thing I can do is control myself. Lately, I’ve just been making sure that when I go home I’m satisfied with my day’s work and not trying to satisfy someone else.”

Parkinson has confirmed that despite the speculation surrounding his future, Mullin will take part Wrexham’s pre-season activities, even going so far as to label him a club legend. In the latest documentary episode, he candidly discussed his choice to omit Mullin from the squad.

He said: “When we brought two strikers in January, we always knew we’d have a surplus and people would find themselves out of the 18-man squad, because you can only have seven substitutes. That’s the way it is and Mulls just didn’t quite get the goals which he normally does.

“Paul and Ollie [Palmer] found themselves out of the 18-man squad. It’s a harder level than we’ve been operating at. They’re both good lads, really good lads, and have carried on training well for us, but it’s tough and it’s a competitive division. To make the step up, it’s not easy.”
