Amy Murphy, who has trained nearly 250 winners, is making a permanent move from Newmarket to take advantage of better prize money in France
British racing is set to lose another of its training talents to France due to poor prize money.
Amy Murphy, 32, has trained 239 winners since she took out a licence, securing Grade 1 success with jumper Kalashnikov and on the Flat winning the 2023 John Smith’s Cup with Pride Of America.
Last season she enjoyed her best campaign on the Flat when she sent out 33 winners at home, winning over £300,000 in prize-money.
In the last three years she added a small satellite operation in France from where she produced six winners in 2024, earnings from which have increasingly subsidised her business in Britain.
She has now announced she will move her whole operation across the Channel where she will join other recent departures, Group 1-winning trainer Adam West and Cheltenham Festival-winning jumps trainer Nick Williams.
“As of February 2025 I will be leaving England and relocating to France in Chantilly,” she said on X.
“We have obviously had a great time here in England in the ten years we’ve been training here and we are looking forward to the opportunities that arrive as we make this exciting move across the water.
“France is ever evolving and has great prize-money levels and that’s our main draw as to why we are moving.
“Whilst we’ve attacked it on a small level, I now believe that I want to have a good go at making a successful career, based from France.”
In the last three years, Murphy has won 23 races in France and plundered prize-money of more than £560,000.
She added: “I am really lucky that some of my incredible team here at Southgate Stables will be joining me in Chantilly. Lots of our owners are following us and we are looking forward to hopefully showing them a new side to racing. It’s exciting for everybody
“The facilities are second to none. There is a huge variety of surfaces, distances and everything you could ever dream to have as a trained based in Chantillly on our doorstep.
“I am young, I’m ambitious and I want to keep building my career. Saturdays are the places where we want to be and I hope this move will help us compete in the big races on the bigger stage.”
