Tributes have been paid to a talented young cyclist who was fatally electrocuted during a trip to see the Tour de France.

Tomás Walsh, 25, from Waterford, Ireland, was in the French capital to watch the 16th stage of the competition when the tragedy occurred. His lifeless body was discovered on the metro tracks at Paris’ Grand Boulevards station. Although not officially confirmed by authorities in France, it has been reported that the man died from electrocution.

The Paris prosecutor’s office has announced it has opened an investigation into his death, and it said there was no evidence at this stage to suggest foul play. A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance, the Irish Mirror report
