Your home will be a ‘no-go’ zone for spiders thanks to 85p item

By staff9 September 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

If you’re anything like me, you’re probably horrified to see a spider in your home. But there’s one spice that spiders detest and it can help keep them out of your house

Spider season has officially begun, much to the horror of arachnophobes across the nation. But this isn’t an issue you have to endure, with several natural solutions available that will keep the eight-legged invaders away from your property.

With this in mind, Liam Cleverdon, cleaning expert and Director at Flooring King, has shared that there’s one spice that spiders absolutely loathe. Even better, you may already have the item in your kitchen cupboards.

He suggests using cinnamon to repel spiders, stating: “You can keep them out of the house by sprinkling some ground cinnamon near windows, doors, and skirting boards.

“You can also add a tablespoon of ground cinnamon to your warm mop water, alongside your usual cleaning solution.

“It’s important to make sure that you have mixed the cinnamon in well as it does have a tendency to linger on the top of liquid and if not diluted properly can leave a gritty residue.

“Once mixed in, mop your floor as usual”, reports the Express.

Ground cinnamon can be picked up from the likes of Sainsbury’s for just 85p and is also available in other supermarkets for slightly more.

And it’s not just cinnamon that can help banish spiders from your property.

Liam also suggests peppermint oil as “surprisingly effective”.

Similar to cinnamon, peppermint has an aroma that spiders despise.

Mix 10-15 drops into water and spray around doors, windows, and cracks.

The third kitchen staple he suggests is the ever-reliable white vinegar.

Liam says: “Vinegar can also be a handy natural deterrent, working in much the same way as essential oils.

“A simple mix of half white vinegar and half water in a spray bottle is enough; just spritz it around door frames, window ledges, or corners where spiders are likely to enter.

“The only thing to watch out for is varnished or polished surfaces, as vinegar can dull the finish over time.”
