Your Samsung Galaxy phone will look inferior tomorrow as something new confirmed

A new processor is on its way that could make your current phone appear inferior.

Samsung might make some of the best phones on the planet, but a big upgrade is launching tomorrow that could make its current range of flagships look a little inferior.

As you may or may not know, phones such as the latest Galaxy S25 and S25 Ultra are all powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite processor. It’s a premium chip that’s packed inside almost all premium Android phones, including devices made by OnePlus, Sony and Honor.

The 8 Elite was first unveiled late last year and offered and it’s now time for it’s replacement to be revealed. Qualcomm is holding a major event in Hawaii this week, and the star of the show will be an all-new brain called the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.

Although full details about this processor have yet to be made official, Qualcomm has confirmed it is coming. The company has also clarified the name and why it appears to have skipped so quickly to Gen 5.

“It might look like we skipped generations, but the truth is simpler — and more powerful,” said Don McGuire, Senior Vice President & Chief Marketing Officer, Qualcomm.

“Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 marks the fifth generation of our premium 8-series platforms since we introduced our new single digit naming and visual identity. By aligning with Gen 5, we’re reinforcing its leadership position and simplifying how consumers understand our product roadmap.”

If, like most people, you don’t follow processor launches (and we don’t blame you), let us explain.

Qualcomm first launched its premium Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip back in 2021. This was then followed by the 8 Gen 2 (2022) and 8 Gen 3 (2023).

However, last year the company switched things up and unveiled the Snapdragon 8 Elite instead of an 8 Gen 4.

Now, it seems it wants to bring back the “Gen” name, as it is the 5th generation of the 8 series.

It’s all pretty confusing, but one thing is for sure: this chip will be very quick. Full details will be announced tomorrow along with which phones might feature it. Watch this space.

“Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 isn’t just a new processor — it’s a defining moment in our premium-tier evolution,” Qualcomm added.

“By staying true to our established naming principles — anchored in performance, timing and portfolio fit — we’re helping consumers and partners alike navigate our roadmap with clarity and confidence.”
