Travel experts have recommended a ‘game-changing’ suitcase packing technique which will save you lots of space if you’re planning on going on any winter getaways this year
Are you jetting off on a winter getaway and worried you won’t be able to fit all your things in your suitcase?
Wether you’ve got hand luggage only, or have paid extra for a suitcase, it can be hard to fit everything you need in if you don’t have a good system in place. Especially in the winter, when you might need to bring bulky coats, jumpers, and boots – which all take up precious space.
Overpacking can land you with a massive fine at the airport, usually ranging from about £11 to £13 per extra kilogram. But luckily, online content creator Aline Lowry has shared a game-changing technique for packing luggage, which has gone viral on TikTok and been seen by more than 6.5 million people. And it will save you lots of space.
And it couldn’t be more simple – all you have to do is vertically stack clothes and belongings in your suitcase instead of the traditional flat fold. Google searches for ‘vertical packing’ have nearly doubled in the last month.
Many travellers say this is the only way they pack now. In the comment section, one person explained: “I do this. Start with heavier items. I put shoes closest to the wheels, then toiletry bag, underwear, socks, because they won’t show any wrinkles, pants, blouses on top.”
Another wrote: “That’s how I always pack. I am able to do two weeks in Europe with a carry-on only packing this way.” A third added: “No way, I have been doing this for five years. You get 50% more stuff in there than packing the normal way.”
Travel experts at Club Med have also shared other smart strategies for packing, including rolling your clothes instead of folding to help save space and minimise wrinkles. You could also try to stuff your shoes with small items like socks or accessories to maximise space.
The experts also recommend wearing your bulky items, including jackets, boots and jumpers, to the airport to save your suitcase space for essentials. Vacuum bags can also be used for bulky items you want to pack, as they can help shrink down the volume of your clothes.
Lastly, try to maximise every corner in your luggage by filling the gaps between the packed items. Stuff hats with underwear, or slip belts through the collar of shirts.
