Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky said he had a “meaningful” phone call with Donald Trump and plans to travel to Washington to meet him after the President’s meeting with Putin
Trump says he and Putin made ‘headway’ but ‘no deal’ yet
Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed he will meet Donald Trump at the White House following yesterday’s Alaska summit with Vladimir Putin.
The Ukrainian leader said he spoke to the US president for more than an hour-and-a-half after Trump met the Russian dictator yesterday. Zelensky also revealed he and the US leader also spoke to European leaders on the phone to discuss his crucial talk with the despot. Ukraine’s President also said he would be open to an in-person meeting with Trump and Putin, an idea the US president floated yesterday.
Zelensky, in a post, said: “On Monday, I will meet with President Trump in Washington, D.C., to discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war. I am grateful for the invitation.”
He added: “Ukraine reaffirms its readiness to work with maximum effort to achieve peace. President Trump informed about his meeting with the Russian leader and the main points of their discussion.
“It is important that America’s strength has an impact on the development of the situation.” Zelensky, while breaking his silence on the Alaska summit, emphasised the role Europe should play in these talks after Trump left the Ukrainian leader out of the meeting about his country’s future.
Ukraine’s leader said: “It is important that Europeans are involved at every stage to ensure reliable security guarantees together with America. We also discussed positive signals from the American side regarding participation in guaranteeing Ukraine’s security.”
This follows the disastrous White House meeting between Trump and Zelensky in February which erupted into a brawl. Trump accused the Ukrainian of “gambling with World War III” while JD Vance claimed Zelensky had not said “thank you” for US support, which the Ukrainian quickly hit back at.
The erratic Republican president shockingly berated his guest and ally in the fight against dictator Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine.
Trump shockingly put out a different display for evil Putin as he rolled out the red carpet for the war criminal and even called him “Vladimir” several times after their meeting in a friendly tone.
Despite the kind handshakes and pats on the back for the criminal despot, Trump said “no deal” was reached during yesterday’s talks.
Trump said: “There were many, many points that we agreed on. I would say a couple of big ones, but we haven’t quite got there, we’ve made some headway. There’s no deal until there’s a deal.”
Zelensky travelled to London on Thursday, ahead of the Alaska talks, to meet Keir Starmer. The pair, also seen in No10’s garden, smiled before a private breakfast to discuss Wednesday’s call with EU leaders and Mr Trump. A Downing Street spokesman said: “They agreed there had been a powerful sense of unity and a strong resolve to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.”
