Spider-Man star Zendaya says acting opposite her boyfriend Tom Holland is ‘strangely comforting’ as she feels ‘extra safe’ with him
Marvel bosses must have witnessed the best chemistry reading ever when they were casting for Spider-Man.
Zendaya and her now boyfriend Tom Holland first met during a script read-through in 2016, and producers must have been beside themselves with how much chemistry emerged between the pair.
Zendaya, who plays MJ in the blockbuster franchise, says as a result, it’s not “ weird ” in the slightest to work with her boyfriend. “It’s actually strangely comfortable,” the 28-year-old tells Vanity Fair.
“It’s like second nature, if anything. You feel extra safe with the person you’re acting beside. I love working with him. He’s so talented, and so passionate about what he does. He always gives things one thousand percent, even if he’s absolutely worn down. I really appreciate that about him.
“It feels pretty normal,” she adds of Tom, 28. “That’s how we met. Literally, at a chemistry read.”
The couple first starred opposite each other in 2017’s Spider Man: Homecoming, and were officially dating by 2021. But Euphoria’s Zendaya has also had moments of cringe opposite her male co-stars, especially on set of tennis film Challengers, where she starred opposite Josh O’Connor.
“Man, I felt so bad with Josh,” Zendaya grimaces. “I was like, ‘I’m constantly just slapping you, and spitting on you. This is just so awful, I’m so sorry.’ He was just so cool about it.”
Zendaya stars on the cover of Vanity Fair’s Hollywood edition, alongside Nicole Kidman and Dev Patel. Read the full interviews at vanityfair.com.
