Guardians of the Galaxy actress Zoe Saldana joined locals in the Eaton neighbourhood of Los Angeles – where over 9,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed – to help distribute supplies
Zoe Saldana has been volunteering with Eaton Fire Victims in Los Angeles and has begged fans to donate to those in need amid the ongoing wildfire crisis in Los Angeles.
Flames have raged around the Californian city for two weeks after fires were sparked back on 7 January – leading to more than 205,000 people to be evacuated and the destruction or damage of over 17,000 properties. As people have returned to the ruins, locals have banded together to help those that have lost everything and those who have been displaced.
On Monday, Guardians of the Galaxy actress Zoe, 46, gave up her time to help volunteers that have been working to aid those affected by fires in the Eaton neighbourhood of Los Angeles. Taking to social media, the star publicised an address so that fans could arrive and donate what they could.
Sharing video footage via Instagram Stories and on her main grid, the actress wrote: “On MLK day we are out here helping the communities of Pasadena and Altadena after the #EatonFire. If you can please bring donations to @daylaborernetwork @pasadenajobcenter at 500 N Lake Ave anytime between 10-5.”
And highlighting what products were in highest demand, she added: “We are short on water, formula, canned foods and fresh produce.” The actress also shared a video of herself working alongside two fellow volunteers and repeated her appeal for supplies.
Wearing a mask as the air in Los Angeles is still filled with the smoke of the burning fires, the star was composed as she addressed the cameras. She announced: “Hi everybody. We’re here at the Pasadena community job centre and I am here with the team organisers.”
She continued: “We are in dire need of a lot of items that are running out. The lines here, the cars and the people that are coming is incredible. The support is incredible, but we need more. So if you guys can, we are here right now.”
She then repeated her hope that fans could share formula milk, bottles of water, canned food and fresh foods and signed off by saying: “Thank you so much.” Fans took to the comments section of Zoe’s video post to support and encourage the local community in Eaton.
One wrote: “Love watching the community build each other up.” Another typed: “I would love to be there helping with you guys.” And others flooded the comments section with heart emojis.
Authorities in the Californian city have warned this week that fresh winds could cause the fires to continue to spread. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said Monday: “Everyone needs to be on high alert.”
She added: “Los Angeles and partner firefighters are pre-deployed, and we ask Angelenos to be prepared in case they need to evacuate.” Red flag warnings – highlighting the most at risk areas – had been in effect until Tuesday morning when it was hoped winds would begin to ease.
