A third of Brits believe people are more likely to fall in love during Christmas than at any other time – and it’s all down to one particular reason

Sky Cinema partners with poet for romantic Christmas verses

Contrary to popular belief, it appears Valentine’s Day isn’t the most romantic time of year after all, as a third of adults confess they’re more romantic at Christmas.

According to a recent survey, Brits believe people are more likely to fall head over heels during the festive season than any other time.

As such, it seems the Christmas season turns Brits into hopeless romantics, with many making grand gestures such as proposals and plucking up the courage to ask their love interests on a date.

Respondents also confess they are more likely to show affection – with more cuddles and hand-holding – in the run-up to 25 December.

Interestingly, the holiday spirit seems to bring out the tender side in people, with over a third admitting it’s easier to express their feelings in December than any other month.

This research was commissioned by Sky Cinema, who has also enlisted the talents of three poets – Donna Ashworth, Chloe Carterr and Georgie Jones – to pen poems inspired by romantic moments from festive films.

A spokesperson revealed, “Christmas and love go hand in hand, clearly. Whether it’s the joyful songs, films, twinkling lights or simply seeing loved ones, this time of the year many of us get caught up in the sheer romance of it all.”

The study also uncovered that 28% think romantic gestures hold more weight over Christmas while winter walks were deemed as the ultimate romantic activity, alongside watching festive films and tree decorating.

It turns out, three out of ten are spurred to be more loving during the festive season by Christmas movies.

Two-fifths are more inclined to watch romance flicks in December than any other time, with the top three listed as Love Actually, The Holiday and Bridget Jones’s Diary.

The famous line from ‘Love Actually’, “to me, you are perfect”, leads the charge as the most iconic rom-com one-liner, picked by 23%.

Other cherished quotes include from ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’: “Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings” (20%), and from ‘Elf’: “I’m in love, I’m in love, and I don’t care who knows it” (10%).

Adding insight into our festive viewing habits, the Sky Cinema spokesperson pointed out: “We’re all familiar with the social media images of people watching the likes of The Holiday as soon as October is done and dusted.

“There is something romantic about snuggling up with a blanket, a hot chocolate in hand, dimmed lights and putting on classic films. With festive favourites like Elf and Love Actually gracing our screens, it’s clear that “Movies have a wonderful way of inspiring us when it comes to heartfelt gestures. “.
