Emergency services were called at 4.30am to Alexandra Drive, Aigburth and residents nearby are being told to close their windows and doors.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: “Please avoid the area. Residents and businesses nearby should close windows and doors. Those with existing medical conditions should keep treatments nearby and if any ill effects are experienced, dial NHS 111 for advice. The incident is ongoing.”

Six fire engines are understood to have been at the scene to tackle the blaze at the three-story building, the LiverpoolEcho reported. Firefighters immediately started to hose down the fire using two high pressure hose reels.

A Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson added: “The incident has been divided into sectors and breathing apparatus is being used. Crews are continuing to fight the fire externally using a hose reel jet and two main branches.”
