Alvaro Morata starred as AC Milan beat Real Madrid in the Champions League earlier this week, but he has now suffered a freak accident in training that will see him stay in hospital overnight

AC Milan star Alvaro Morata will spend the night in hospital after being involved in a scary clash of heads during training.

Morata joined Milan in the summer from Atletico Madrid, fresh from captaining Spain to winning Euro 2024. While he has struggled for goals at the Serie A giants, he was on the scoresheet for Tuesday’s shock win at Real Madrid.

The Spain star was on hand to turn in Milan’s second goal of the night after Rafael Leao’s initial shot was parried back into the danger area by Andriy Lunin. But his hopes of continuing his scoring run have been dashed.

Milan travel to Cagliari on Saturday evening, but Morata will now miss the game. The veteran striker was involved in an incident in training on Thursday that will force him to remain on the sidelines.

According to Sky Sports Italia, Morata suffered an injury to his head after a collision in training with centre-back Strahinja Pavlovic. It is understood that the striker took a hard hit during a mid-air clash with his team-mate.

The 32-year-old was taken to a local hospital after the incident where he underwent an MRI scan. That thankfully came back negative, but Morata is expected to stay in for observation for a few hours so doctors can ascertain a full diagnosis.

He is expected to remain in hospital overnight and will miss Saturday’s game in Sardinia. Milan boss Paulo Fonseca is already preparing for Morata’s absence, with England international Tammy Abraham expected to take his place in the starting line-up.

It is unknown at this point if Morata will be fit enough to feature in Spain’s upcoming Nations League games. La Roja boss Luis de la Fuente will name his squad on Friday for trip to Denmark and the visit of Switzerland.

Fonseca meanwhile will likely rue Morata’s unfortunate accident after his heroics at the Bernabeu. Following this side’s memorable win, the Portuguese coach hailed the Spanish striker.

“Abraham is a player with different characteristics. Alvaro has this ability to connect the midfield with the attack, whereas Abraham does not have those qualities. When Morata came off, it’s true that we stopped having so much of the ball,” Fonseca said.

“However, Alvaro was really tired and we needed to make the chance. Abraham does work well defensively and holds up the ball, but naturally he is not the same as Morata. I do not agree when people say Italian football is defensive.

“We can be a team with more initiative and dominance of the match in Europe, these are the characteristics of the team. We proved that Italian teams don’t just defend, we played the ball and had great positioning. The side has the patience to keep the ball, picking the right moment to attack.”
