John McEnroe, Nick Kyrgios and Andy Murray shared a light-hearted chat on camera at Wimbledon but the American wasn’t too impressed with Murray’s honesty

John McEnroe was left “disappointed” after Andy Murray cheekily suggested the American tennis legend was “crazier” than Nick Kyrgios.

The trio shared a jovial exchange on camera at Wimbledon following Murray’s exit from the doubles competition on Thursday. The Scot, together with his brother Jamie, was defeated in straight sets by Australian pair Rinky Hijikata and John Peers.

But despite the loss, the 37-year-old seemed in high spirits as he humorously asked McEnroe if Kyrgios, who has been on punditry duty at SW19 this week, had been “behaving himself”. Kyrgios, 29, playfully redirected the jibe towards McEnroe, 65, saying: “Yeah he [McEnroe] has been good,” prompting the veteran to ask Murray: “Do you mean him or me?”

Before Murray could respond, Kyrgios quipped: “He’s actually, you’re crazier than I am hands down.” McEnroe then sought Murray’s opinion on the matter but wasn’t too pleased with the response.

“I’d probably [say McEnroe was crazier],” said Murray, who is a long-time friend of Kyrgios’. “I maybe know him [Kyrgios] a bit better off the court so, I’ve obviously seen both of you on it and both of you are obviously up there on the crazy spectrum on the court, but off it, yeah…”

Kyrgios interjected, jesting: “I’ve got time to make that up though by the time I get to your age.” To which McEnroe responded: “Man, that’s a little disappointing but it’s honest.”

Both McEnroe and Kyrgios are renowned for their fiery on-court demeanours. McEnroe, a legend of the game, was infamous for his explosive temper during his heyday, with his “you cannot be serious” tirade at Wimbledon in 1981 becoming an iconic moment in sports history.

Kyrgios, who’s often dubbed the bad boy of tennis, has built a reputation as a maverick both on and off the court. His aggressive playing style and volatile nature, along with his penchant for showmanship, have made him one of the most compelling figures in the sport today.

Earlier this month, during an appearance on Piers Morgan Uncensored, Kyrgios boldly claimed he would easily defeat McEnroe if they were to clash at the peak of their powers. “It’d be an easy walk for me. I think so… I’m serving pretty big,” boasted the Aussie star.

“I mean, it’s a different era… I mean, [Roger] Federer, [Rafael] Nadal and Novak [Djokovic] have struggled. So, I don’t know how McEnroe is going to go against returning my serve. He [McEnroe] is lucky that he didn’t play in this day and age because I don’t know how that would have gone for the big fella. He would have probably lashed out a little bit too much on people on social media!”
