Newcastle supporters were able to enjoy some free drinks ahead of their match against Brighton on Saturday thanks to winger Anthony Gordon, who put some money behind the bar at The Strawberry pub

Newcastle star Anthony Gordon has thanked Toon fans for their support by putting money behind the bar at a local pub ahead of their game against Brighton.

Gordon joined Newcastle from Everton in January 2023 and the winger has become a fan favourite, with his performances earning him the club’s player of the season award earlier this year.

And the England international has further endeared himself to Newcastle fans after leaving money behind the bar at The Strawberry pub so supporters could enjoy some free drinks ahead of their side’s clash with Brighton at St James’ Park.

“Top man @anthonygordon. Putting money behind the bar at @theberrypub to thank fans for their support! Cheers for the pint,” Newcastle’s Supporters Club wrote on social media.

Gordon’s gesture was his way of thanking the fans for supporting him after he missed a penalty in their previous game against Everton. His spot kick was saved by goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and the match ended 0-0, with Gordon getting booed and jeered by Toffees fans.

Everton also took a dig at their former player, posting a clip of his miss on social media with the buzzer noise from TV quiz show Family Fortunes in response to a post from a fan who said: “Wish they had of played the buzzer from half time when the penalty was saved”.

However, Jamie Carragher hit out at Everton over the post, writing: “Local lad who came through your academy, helped keep you up under Lampard, wanted out because the club was a shambles on and off the pitch & who you then sold for £40million. The Peoples club!”

Gordon did start Newcastle’s game against Brighton, but he was unable to help them pick up a win. Danny Welbeck scored the only goal of the game as Seagulls earned a 1-0 victory, but the forward was also stretchered off after suffering a back injury.

Welbeck went down after a clash with Fabian Schar and was given oxygen as he was stretchered off the pitch. The striker was seen in conversation with some of his team-mates as he left the field and it remains to be seen how serious the injury is.
