Despite reportedly having a very healthy bank account balance, former world champion boxer Anthony Joshua still lives with his mum at 34 – and there’s a unique reason why

Anthony Joshua may have conquered some of the toughest names in the world of boxing, but he still lives under his mum’s roof.

AJ, 34, is currently preparing for his IBF heavyweight title fight with Daniel ‘DDD’ Dubois at Wembley Stadium this weekend, a bout which could nudge him in the direction of undisputed greatness if he gets the win. While Joshua has previously held the WBC International, Commonwealth, British, IBF, WBA (Super), WBO and IBO titles at one point of another at heavyweight, he has been beltless since his 2021 loss on points to Oleksandr Usyk.

Should he be able to beat 27-year-old Dubois for his newly-found IBF strap, he could have the chance of unifying all four belts for undisputed greatness against the winner of Usyk and Tyson Fury following their rematch this December. As of late, Joshua has spent an abundance of time on the roads, training Stateside as he prepares for his big boxing showdowns.

And this is the reason that the hard-hitter has conceded that he still lives with his mum, Yeta. Speaking to Good Morning Britain, AJ said: “I still live with my mum. I realised that when I started training – which I do away from home a lot – that if I’m away for 10 months of the year and then when I get back I’ve got to do commercial work I realise that if I was to move out I’d never actually see my mum.

“I’m away in various parts of the world for a lot of the time, but my actual base is at home with mum. So I can still wake up and see her and spend time with her when I can.” Presenter Susanna Reid then hilariously responded: “That is so lovely. That is just like the tender heart of someone who is about to go into a ring and try and knock someone out.”

Elsewhere in their conversation, AJ admitted that his mum can’t bear to watch him while he fights, adding: “Sometimes she doesn’t show up, she stays behind and she prays a lot. She says she can’t really watch her son because she doesn’t enjoy it. It’s tough for her, of course, but she enjoys the fruits of her labour. I take care of my mum a lot, I love her dearly.”

AJ will have the pick of the bunch in terms of properties worldwide should he ever decide to leave home, with Forbes estimating that he’s racked up an incredible $83million (£63.5m) fortune thanks to his boxing career and lucrative brand deals. Some of his biggest paychecks in the squared-circle make other fighters’ earnings look like a drop in the ocean when compared – raking in a reported $75million (£57.4m) for his Usyk rematch in 2022, and $72million (£55.1m) for his win over Andy Ruiz Jr in 2019.
