Anthony Kim has taken the decision to commit to the International Series event in Qatar later this month, as the LIV Golf wildcard ventures away from the breakaway league
Anthony Kim, the former PGA Tour star, is set to make a surprise appearance at the Asian Tour’s International Series later this month.
The Californian golfer, who hasn’t played competitively in 12 years, made the decision to commit to the event in Qatar after receiving a wildcard from LIV Golf. With the 2024 season of LIV Golf wrapping up in September at the Team Championship, players on the roster face a lengthy wait before they can return to action on the breakaway league.
A five-month offseason means the league won’t be back until February for the start of their 2025 campaign. In the meantime, many LIV members have chosen to participate in the league’s feeder tour, the International Series, with their next event taking place at Doha Golf Club in the Qatar capital. Among the 18-strong field are golfers such as Patrick Reed, Louis Oosthuizen, and Charl Schwartzel, who will be joined by Kim, one of the league’s 2024 wildcards.
Kim was a shock signing by the Saudi-backed circuit earlier this year, having been out of competitive play for over a decade. Despite being signed as one of the league’s wildcards alongside Hudson Swafford, Kim struggled to regain the form that marked him as a rising star early in his career.
His rusty performance was perhaps to be expected after such a long hiatus. Kim’s future in the breakaway league is uncertain beyond 2025, despite being signed as a wildcard. He has modest expectations for his return, which he says is motivated by a desire to support his family.
Reflecting on his decision earlier this year, Kim shared: “When Greg [Norman] and I spoke before I made the decision to come to LIV, he talked about how he wanted me to be around my family and to feel supported.
“Not feel like I’m an island and you walk by everybody and you to the extent say hello. I’m not saying everyone on this tour is best friends, but there’s definitely a lot of support out here. My family has been treated world-class by everyone, whether it be Jane and the media team, Greg, Jed, all those guys have been amazing.”
“It’s easy to reach out to them and get support. I know that I have a lot of people coming into town this week, and Martin with travel has just made everything so easy.”
Later this month, Kim will head to the Asian Tour, returning after participating in the International Series event in Macau in March.
