A magnitude 7.5 earthquake in Argentina has prompted a tsunami warning along the coasts of Chile and sparked terror with people fleeing from their homes.

The warning says hazardous waves are possible for coasts within 300km of the earthquake epicentre. Local government agencies have been instructed to warn coastal populations which may be at risk and to monitor threat levels.

People living on coasts have been told to stay alert, while monitoring services try to establish the likelihood of waves striking the coast and an any estimated times of arrival. Residents are being reminded the first wave to strike might not be the largest and the time between waves can be anything between five minutes to an hour.
