Liverpool have ended Manchester City’s run of four consecutive Premier League title wins by triumphing this season, with Arne Slot admitting that their poor run of form has “helped”

Arne Slot admits that Manchester City’s struggles this season “helped” Liverpool win the Premier League. Liverpool were confirmed as champions with a dominant 5-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Luis Diaz, Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah were all on target, while Destiny Udgoie scored an own goal after Dominic Solanke had given Spurs the lead. Liverpool’s victory means they have ended City’s dominant run of four consecutive title wins.

City currently sit fourth in the league, 21 points behind Liverpool, having suffered a poor run of form after suffering their first defeat of the season to Bournemouth in November. That result sparked a run of just one win in nine games that saw City drop from top of the league to seventh by December.

And Slot has acknowledged that City’s form played a part in Liverpool’s triumph.

“For almost the whole season we were on top of the league, and we had the team that was able to win it, but also you know how tough the Premier League is,” he said.

“You cannot take anything for granted but the belief for us to win it was almost throughout the whole season. It helped that Man City had a difficult spell, which they hadn’t had in five years.

“That helped us a bit as well. When the season started, everyone would have been happy if we finished in the top four. But that wasn’t fair for our players, who are much better than that.”

And City boss Pep Guardiola paid tribute to Liverpool and their victory after he guided his side to a third successive FA Cup final. “Before I start, on behalf of myself and all the club, we want to congratulate Liverpool or their Premier League victory,” he said at his post-match press conference.

“It’s well deserved, no doubts about that. They are a fantastic team. For one year, they’re going to retain the title and hopefully next season we can be better to compete until the end, which this season was not possible. So congratulations to Liverpool.”

City beat Nottingham Forest 2-0 at Wembley to reach the FA Cup final, but when asked if lifting the trophy and qualifying for next season’s Champions League would help make up for his side’s failure to defend their title Guardiola replied: “Nooo!

“This season has not been good. We are a thousand million points behind Liverpool. it’s not good. Look at the Champions League. We won one game? Two games?

“We were always a machine and we have not been good this season, but the damage will be minor. It’s not going to confuse the fact that the season has not been good. The club has to make the right decisions so next season we will be better.”
