Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus has been in hospital for surgery after suffering a cruciate ligament injury during Arsenal’s FA Cip match against Manchester United

Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus has shared a photo from hospital as he begins his comeback from an ACL injury.

The Brazil international went down injured in the FA Cup match against Manchester United, with many fearing the worst. Sure enough, Jesus – who missed a chunk of the 2022-23 campaign with a separate knee injury – is now expected to sit out the remainder of the season.

After partner Raiane Lima shared a photo of the 27-year-old on his hospital bed, Jesus shared an update of his own. He was all smiles in the photo as he held up a pair of crutches in a hospital hallway.

“There will always be answers to everything, which we will only know later on,” the caption for his image read. “I believe and trust in God.”

The update comes just over a week after Arsenal issued a statement of their own on the injury. “Further to being substituted with an injury during our match with Manchester United on Sunday, Gabriel Jesus has received extensive assessments, scans and specialist reviews which have confirmed that he has sustained an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee,” it read.

“Gabby will undergo surgery in the coming days and will soon begin his recovery and rehabilitation programme. We will continue to keep everyone updated with Gabby’s recovery, with everyone at the club fully focused on supporting Gabby to ensure he is back to full fitness as soon as possible.”

Arsenal’s number nine has joined team-mate Bukayo Saka on the sidelines after the England star suffered a hamstring injury in December. Saka has undergone surgery, and is expected back in time to play a part later this season.

Arsenal have welcomed Ethan Nwaneri back to training, giving them another option in the wide forward areas. The 17-year-old started and scored against Brighton in early January but only managed 45 minutes against the Seagulls, with a muscle injury keeping him out of the Gunners’ last two league games.

“It was a big setback because he was getting some consistency and more minutes,” manager Mikel Arteta said of Nwaneri’s injury. “We made him play in a different position and he was doing really well, then suddenly this happens. It’s understandable with the load as well, it goes through the roof immediately and this is what we have to manage.”

Nwaneri is among those in contention to feature for Arsenal against Dinamo Zagreb in their Wednesday night Champions League game. Arteta’s team have 13 points from their first six matches, and a win against the Croatian side would put them in pole position to progress to the round of 16 without the need for a play-off.
