Leroy Sane could leave Bayern Munich when his contract expires in the summer and Arsenal have been urged to make a move for the winger, who previously worked with Mikel Arteta at Manchester City

Arsenal have been urged to try and sign Bayern Munich star Leroy Sane this summer by offering him a “performance-based contract”. Sane is out of contract at the end of the season and Arsenal are among the clubs that have been linked with a move for the winger.

Sane has fallen down the pecking order at Bayern this season, making just 14 Bundesliga starts so far following the big-money summer signing of Michael Olise from Crystal Palace. And former Bayern star Dietmar Hamann believes Sane could be a “brilliant player” for Arsenal if he has an incentive to perform more consistently.

“Leroy Sane’s consistency has been a problem with Bayern Munich,” Hamann told PokerScout. “This is why he probably won’t get offered a new contract.

“However, I think if you give him a performance-based contract, you’d have a brilliant player on your hands. That’s what I would do. I heard that Arsenal are interested and I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the case.

“I think he’s a good kid. I think some people read too much into body language, if you look at Lionel Messi’s body language you think he’s a non-league player.

“So I don’t give too much thought to that, I think he’s a good kid. The fact is he’s not been consistent enough, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be for Arsenal next season.”

Sane has a wealth of Premier League experience, having won two league titles, three League Cups and an FA Cup during his time at Manchester City. He also worked alongside Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta during his time at the Etihad as Guardiola’s assistant.

A number of Bayern players entered this season with expiring contracts and Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies, Joshua Kimmich and Manuel Neuer have all signed extensions. It has also been announced that Thomas Muller will be leaving the club in the summer after Bayern decided against offering him a new deal.

When asked for an update on Sane’s future last month, Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl said: “There is still no decision on Leroy. With his current performances, he is providing arguments in favor of a new contract.

“We have to discuss: Which contracts do we extend and how does it fit into the overall constellation? Leroy, like everyone else, has a chance of getting a new contract.”

Arteta has already admitted the club are set for a “big summer” in the transfer market after Andrea Berta was confirmed as their new sporting director. “I think Andrea is a big addition to the club, a big addition to the team, a team that is already formed with a lot of great people,” Arteta said.

“Every summer is big because it is an opportunity and especially because of the number of players we have in the squad right now that is necessary.

“But it’s a big summer for many things because first of all we have to maintain the good foundations that we have and then obviously how can we improve and evolve the team.”
