Arsenal have one foot in the Champions League semi-finals thanks to Tuesday night’s stunning 3-0 first leg win over Real Madrid at the Emirates. And that will have the Gunners’ accountants whistling with joy having already banked £55.8million in prize money for their efforts in Europe this season.

And should Mikel Arteta ’s team go all the way to glory in Munich at the end of May they are in line to £89.2million from prize money.

Each club involved in the expanded league phase received a base payment of £15.6million with £1.75million on offer per each league phase win and £585,000 for a league phase draw. Arsenal won six and drew one of their league fixtures – equating to just over £11million.

There was then an additional bonus payment worth £9.5million for finishing third in the league phase – with each position worth £230,000 on top of a £1.67million for being in the top eight.

Reaching the round of 16 resulted in a payment of £9.2million and by hammering PSV Eindhoven Arteta’s men earned another £10.5million to reach the last eight.

Should they complete the job against Real at the Santiago Bernabeu next week, Arsenal will receive an additional £13million.Each finalist will then get £15.5million with the winner being given a top up of £5.4million on top of the glory of lifting the trophy.

After Declan Rice scored a brace of stunning free kicks, with Mikel Merino adding a third, Arteta said: “I’m very proud. It was a complete performance. We dominated the game and caused them problems.

“There were some magic moments. And it sums up the night. I was very convinced from the preparation that we were really at it. That we could make it happen. We delivered and I’m very happy. It’s half time but we have taken a huge step in the right direction.

“Rice has never scored a free kick in his career, we have not scored a direct free kick since Burnley away in September 2021. What are the odds? It was two moments of individual quality and we have to show we can do that again next week.

“Real Madrid changed the competition, they are the best team in the history of the competition and it was so important for us to take the next step.”
