Sam and Nia Rader became an internet sensation as they went viral from vlogging their daily lives, which showcased their seemingly perfect marriage.
Posting a number of videos on their YouTube channel, fans were able to get a front row seat of their relationship highs and lows. In one video posted on the channel, the couple were enjoying a road trip with their child in the back seat as they lip-synched along to Disney’s Frozen: Love Is An Open Door, which many believed was one of the most cringe-worthy videos to date.
But the public were still gripped with their daily updates. So much so, in one video, Sam secretly tested her urine and surprised Nia with the news that she was pregnant. But the couple’s seemingly perfect life turned upside down in a matter of hours after it emerged Sam had signed up to a website aimed at targeting married men who want to embark on an affair, named Ashley Madison.
Details of the site’s members was hacked in 2015 which forced Sam to come forward and confess to Nia that he had gone behind her back to forge an illicit affair with a complete stranger. Speaking about the moment their life was rocked by the extra-marital website, which is now a Netflix docuseries Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies and Scandal, Nia explained to the publication Tudum: “It’s still shocking to me that things like this exist.”
She added: “It was very shocking. I was surprised that Sam would have been drawn to a website like that in the first place, because it was outside of his usual morals and character.” Before either Sam or Nia had the opportunity to tell their friends and family that they were going to be in the spotlight for a completely different reason, news of the sex scandal had already started to circulate.
Sam added: “Our family were all very supportive and understanding that as humans — broken humans — we make mistakes. The people in my life I’m accountable to — my brothers, and my pastor — they were trying to ask me if there’s anything more to the story. At the time I told them no.”
Explaining the reason behind joining the website, Sam admitted: “I’m not angry at Ashley Madison, definitely not angry at the hackers. I was already on a horrible path when Ashley Madison was advertised to me. Of course, it’s frustrating that they didn’t keep my data safe, but I just see it as the Lord exposing me and bringing [me] out of the darkness.”
Despite going through an incredibly tough time in their marriage, the pair were able to stay united. Nia said that instead of shying away from the public, she wanted to take part in the documentary to show the public, life is tough and people make mistakes.
She continued: “Social media can show you exactly what you want to see. It can show you everything you’re not, everything you wish you were. Somebody’s got to step up and say, ‘Life is messy and ugly, and we’ve made mistakes and we’ve done things, but there’s still hope out there.’”
