Avocados are a breakfast staple, whether you’re mashing them on toast or blending them into a smoothie, but working out how to keep them fresh can be tricky.

Most people don’t use an entire avocado in one go and then make the error of popping the remaining half in the fridge, which often results in it going off the next day.

Fortunately, Attosa, a cook from Thrifty Fun, has revealed that storing avocados correctly to keep them “super fresh” is surprisingly straightforward, as all you need to do is store them with a chopped up onion, reports the Express.

She explained: “I’ve tried all the various methods of keeping my avocados and guacamole fresh, but this is by far the best yet. Keep a piece of cut onion in a container alongside your cut avocado or prepared guacamole and it will stay fresh and bright for several days.”

How do onions prevent avocados from going brown?

Avocados tend to go off rapidly due to a process known as oxidation, which occurs when the enzymes within the fruit react to oxygen.

When avocado slices are left exposed to air, the flesh will start to deteriorate swiftly, causing them to turn brown and mushy.

Onions emit a small quantity of gas containing sulphur, which can disrupt these enzymes’ activity and reduces oxidation, so avocados remain fresh for much longer.

Onion slices won’t alter the flavour of an avocado, but are instead a straightforward method to prolong their shelf life for several extra days, or even up to a week. Here’s how to use onions to keep your avocados fresh.

Simply pop your avocado in an airtight container, which will help trap the sulphur gases inside.

Next, add a few slices of onion to the same container as your avocado slice.

Opt for white or red onions as they pack more sulphur than their yellow counterparts, making them more effective at preserving your avocados.

Ensure the avocado and onion slices aren’t touching, then just stick it in the fridge.

This natural trick helps your avocados stay fresh for longer, meaning you can dodge wasting any unused halves, save a bit of dosh, and reduce food waste.
