Police and paramedics rushed to an address in Newport, South Wales after recieving reports of a medical emergency – a baby was later confirmed to have died in hospital

A man has been arrested on suspicion of child neglect after a baby died in hospital.

Police and paramedics rushed to an address in Newport, South Wales at 6.30am on Tuesday 4 March following reports of a medical emergency. The baby was taken to hospital, and was initially reported to be in a stable condition. Police confirmed that the baby died several days later.

Witnesses described seeing a large number of ambulances and police cars at the scene on the night of the incident.
Criminal investigations teams were reported to have remained at the property for several hours after the arrival of emergency services.

Today, police confirmed that 35-year-old man from the town of Blaenavon had been arrested on suspicion of child neglect, and has since been released on conditional bail. A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: “We received a report of a medical emergency at an address in Gaer Vale, Newport at around 6.30am on Tuesday 4 March.

“Officers and paramedics attended, and a baby was taken to hospital, the baby has since sadly died. A 35-year-old man from Blaenavon was arrested on suspicion of child neglect. He has since been released on conditional bail.”
