A mum is being quizzed by police after her 21-month-old daughter plunged nearly 40 feet off a third floor apartment balcony apartment shut inside a cat carrier.

Shocked passersby found the badly injured tot crying in the grounds of the apartment block in the German capital Berlin on 10th June, said police.

Cops say she suffered fractures to her arms and legs and is being treated in hospital. Photographs of police gathering evidence in the grounds show the hard-shelled plastic carrier with a barred door lying on its side on paving bricks at a bicycle stand.

Berlin Police said in a statement obtained by Newsflash on 11th June: “Yesterday afternoon, the 3rd Homicide Squad of the State Criminal Police Office and the Berlin public prosecutor’s office took over the investigation into an attempted murder of a small child in Altglienicke.

“A witness had found an injured 21-month-old girl under a window at the rear of an apartment building on Ortolfsstrasse. She was immediately taken to hospital by rescue workers for inpatient treatment with serious injuries from a fall. According to current information, her life is not in danger.”

Meanwhile, forensic experts cordoned off the grounds and flat, and secured the carrier. The girl’s 41-year-old mother, who was at home when her daughter fell, was held for questioning.

Another child, also present in the apartment, was put into the care of the city’s youth welfare office. The investigation is still ongoing.
