If your towels are starting to smell a little funky, even if you’re washing them regularly, a powerful kitchen duo may be the secret to banishing mouldy scents for good
Cleaning enthusiasts are hailing a cheap, natural, method to banish those mouldy smells from your towels.
Despite an alarming number of men admitting to only washing their towels once a year, the majority of Brits try to keep on top of their laundry duties. But even if you’re washing your towels every couple of days, they can quickly harbour bacteria and soon start to smell a little funky.
Let’s face it, nobody wants to dry themselves off with a shower with a towel that smells like mould and mildew. But luckily, there is a £1.58 hack that will keep your towels fresh as a daisy.
Taking to Facebook, fans of cleaning guru Mrs Hinch raved about using white vinegar in their laundry to eliminate any horrid odours for good. To do this, simply add half a cup of the cleaner into the drum of your washing machine and complete the cycle as normal.
However, cleaning experts over at Victorian Plumbing say you can go one step further to achieving towels that would pass the most luxury hotel standard. “One tip I would recommend when doing this is to increase the heat of your wash,” bathroom specialist Brenna Ryan said.
“Though washing clothes can often be done on colder washes, when washing towels increasing the heat to 40-60 degrees can help to ensure they are fully clean and free of the bacteria which causes this musty smell. The expert added: “Adding bicarbonate of soda into your wash can also help give your towels a helping hand. [It] increases freshness and eliminates odours.”

You can pick up white vinegar from most supermarkets and online retailers. Morrisons is currently selling a one-litre bottle for 99p – or if you want to stock up on the natural cleaner, you can grab a 10-litre bottle from Amazon for £8.50. This works out much cheaper, at just 85p per litre.
Bicarbonate of soda is also available at your local supermarket or general retailer – with Morrisons selling a 180g tub for only 59p. Again, if you want to stock up on the kitchen staple – you can grab a 5kg bucket from B&Q for £14.99. However, this is only available online, and can’t be picked up in store.
