A ‘magic’ cleaning hack could get rid of burnt-on grease and grime from baking trays and roasting dishes – and it’s an item you probably have in your kitchen already

Revive your grimy baking trays with this “magic” cleaning hack.

We all know the struggle of keeping our baking trays and roasting tins spotless. Just one use seems to make them emerge from the oven caked in stubborn grease and grime that just won’t shift.

You could try lining your trays with baking paper or foil, but it’s not always ideal, particularly for deep roasting tins that also get dirty on the sides. However, there’s no need to fret because there’s a simple solution to make your trays gleam again – and it’s likely sitting in your kitchen cupboard right now.

The trick was revealed on Reddit when a user sought advice for cleaning a roasting dish with persistent oil marks left from roasting veggies the previous evening.

The person asked: “How would you go about cleaning this pan? Dawn [washing up liquid] and a Scrub Daddy did nothing to it. Vegetables in olive oil were roasted on it.”

The post quickly attracted over 140 comments within the first 12 hours, with many eager to offer their cleaning wisdom. Among the top tips was the tried-and-true household hero – baking soda.

A commenter recommended: “Hot water with baking soda sprinkled on the stain. Leave it overnight, and it will wash off.”

Another suggested: “Make a thick paste with baking soda and water and use one of the green sponges or any scrubbing sponge. If it doesn’t come right off, then add a little more baking soda. I do this on a regular basis with my pans.”

Meanwhile, a third shared a different approach: “Boil hot water, pour in, add baking soda and a bit of [washing up liquid], and leave overnight. Because it’s aluminium, I would use parchment paper on the bottom of the pan to cook. Much easier to clean!”

There was no shortage of tips for tackling that tenacious pan stain, as people advised everything from an energetic scrub with steel wool to an all-night soak with a dishwasher tablet.

One user said: “No need for so much extra work and product. Sprinkle a bit of dish soap or dishwasher detergent. Soak with HOT water overnight. Done!”

Other commentators took a more relaxed approach, proposing to live with the stain and use baking paper or kitchen foil in the future.
