A ‘delightful’ market town steeped in history offers a similar charm to the acclaimed Cotswolds – without the crowds of bustling tourists. Tucked away in the Uttlessford district of Essex, some 40-something miles from London, lies the often under-appreciated Saffron Walden.

Don’t be deterred by the ‘Essex’ you see on reality TV shows like The Only Way Is Essex – this quaint town is dripping in medieval architecture, has a thriving high street, and isn’t saturated with tanning salons. In fact, it was recently crowned the best place to live in the UK by the Sunday Times.

With a size so small it feels like a village, Saffron Walden’s community feel is undeniable. It’s the perfect place for a staycation weekend, especially for those who can’t get enough of window shopping and people-watching while sipping on a coffee.

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver described the town’s food scene as being ‘on fire’ at the moment, thanks to ‘a new generation of young grafters’ opening up independent eateries across the area. Whether you’re in the mood for a fancy Italian, traditional pub grub, or even a cheeky Fish & Chip supper – this place has got you sorted.

With a ‘rich heritage’ and a wealth of old buildings, Saffron Walden is a true gem for history lovers. Check out St Mary’s Church, the largest parish church in Essex, and meander through the grounds of the Castle Keep which dates back to the 1130s or 40s. Saffron Walden Museum is also a popular attraction – home to a plethora of fascinating artefacts spanning from mammoth tusks to early Tudor bedrooms.

“Bridge End Garden is a real jewel and an environment of great charm on the north side of Saffron Walden,” hailed Visit Saffron Walden. “Careful restoration has replicated gardening techniques and designs typical of the Victorian era and brought the garden back to its full splendour.

“The wonderful hedge maze is of particular appeal to children. The path into the garden passes the Fry Art Gallery which houses a collection of works by a Great Bardfield group of artists who settled in the Essex countryside in the 1930s.”

History buffs will adore the town, which has direct trains to London(Image: Humphrey Nemar/staff Photographer.)

Londoners can reach Saffron Walden in around one hour and 41 minutes in the car – but direct train routes, which operate daily, can slash the journey time in half. If you’re flexible with dates, you can get single adult fares from the Big Smoke for as little as £19.

Accommodation in the town is plentiful, making it great for both those on a budget and travellers wanting to splash out. For example, a weekend’s stay (Friday, June 6-8) in a one-bedroom cottage costs just £219, based on two people sharing. However, a much bugger three-bed holiday home costs £517 on the exact same dates.
