A self-styled “beauty consultant” offering Brazilian butt lifts has been banned after multiple clients claimed they were left in “severe pain” and one needed a life-saving operation.
Ricky Sawyer, 28, whose client list has included Katie Price, who has been called “unreputable” will no longer be able to carry out any cosmetic procedures across England and Wales. It comes after one person even went on to develop sepsis and had to be rushed to hospital for surgery with her life in danger, said a council. An injunction has been served on Sawyer, 28, at an address in East India Dock Road, East London, after a hearing at Manchester Civil Justice Centre
Trafford Council said how many people in Greater Manchester were left in “severe pain” following his treatment and the client who developed sepsis. Mr Sawyer has been offering appointments across the country at locations such as domestic rental properties or hotel rooms.
The Brazilian butt lift (BBL) procedure offered by Mr Sawyer is intended to add volume to buttocks using hyaluronic acid-based injectable fillers. But the risks include injury to blood vessels and nerves during surgery, bruising, infection, skin discoloration, changes to skin sensation, scarring, pain, lumps under the skin and loss of skin in treated areas due to deep infection, fat embolism in the heart and lungs, cellulitis, contour deformity and asymmetric buttocks.
Trafford Council’s environmental health team submitted evidence that people were being left in horrific pain and called Mr Sawyer ‘unreputable’, reported the Manchester Evening News.
Mr Sawyer’s injunction prevents him from carrying out any cosmetic procedure throughout England and Wales or instructing anyone else to do so. The court heard it was necessary to make a country-wide ban.
There will be a further hearing at Manchester County Court on Monday, June 16, at which Mr Sawyer can make representations before the three-year order is finalised, said the council.
Councillor Rose Thompson, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Communities and Safety, said: “I am delighted we have secured an injunction against this man. I have heard horrific stories from people who thought they were getting safe cosmetic surgery and ended up with appalling injuries.
“This case has been particularly difficult as these pop-up clinics take place all over the country. Our environmental health team has worked really hard, in partnership with colleagues at Manchester and Salford councils, as well as Greater Manchester Police, to help collate evidence and bring it to court.
“It’s vital we protect the public from harm as part of our objective that all our communities will be happy, healthy and safe.” Mark Elliott, President of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, said: “This is a tremendous achievement on the part of local environmental health practitioners.
“We believe that the most high-risk cosmetic procedures, such as the BBL, should be designated as surgical and undertaken only by appropriately trained, regulated and experienced GMC-registered doctors.” The NHS publishes advice and guidance about seeking cosmetic procedures.
