New Manchester United signing Benjamin Sesko may well be handed his preferred No.30 shirt at Old Trafford… all thanks to the largely unheralded new signing Diego Leon.

United finally sealed their long-awaited move for the Slovenian international after beating Newcastle in the race for his signature after agreeing a £74m deal with RB Leipzig. He is the fourth signing of the summer for United, who have already sanctioned big-money buys on Matheus Cunha for £62.5m and Bryan Mbeumo for around £71m. Young left-back Diego Leon has also arrived in a deal worth £7m.

And thanks to the young left-back, Sesko may well be handed the No.30 shirt he wore during his time at Leipzig and which, by all accounts, he’d grown rather fond of.

Fellow new signing Leon, 18, was initially handed the No.30 shirt during pre-season, wearing it when he featured for Ruben Amorim’s side. But he has now switched to No 35.

That decision clears the way for Sesko, who was introduced to fans on Saturday at Old Trafford – to take the No.30 ahead of his union up top with fellow new boys Bryan Mbeumo – who will be No.19 – and Matheus Cunha, who has inherited the No.10 shirt.

When asked why he had chosen to sign for United despite competition from Newcastle, who are playing in the Champions League this season, Sesko said he was excited about the future of the club under manager Ruben Amorim.

“The history of Manchester United is obviously very special but what really excites me is the future,” he said. “When we discussed the project, it was clear that everything is in place for this team to continue to grow and compete for the biggest trophies again soon.

“From the moment that I arrived, I could feel the positive energy and family environment that the club has created. It is clearly the perfect place to reach my maximum level and fulfil all of my ambitions.

“I cannot wait to start learning from Ruben and connecting with my team-mates to achieve the success that we all know we are capable of together.”
