Dartmouth, a charming town beside the River Dart in Devon, has previously been named one of Britain’s “best seaside towns” thanks to its idyllic riverside atmosphere and vibrant waterfront activities. Known for its quaint pastel-coloured homes and the hustle and bustle brought by boats sailing along the river, Dartmouth made it to the top lists of CN Traveller as one of the UK’s “best staycation ideas” and was also lauded by Time Out as one of England’s “best seaside towns” in 2024.

In their review, Time Out said: “Okay, so it’s technically not actually a seaside town – rather a town on the banks of the River Dart, a couple of miles from the sea.” They further described the allure of Dartmouth, mentioning: “But Dartmouth comes with everything you could want in a trip to the coast.

“There are historic pubs, and there are walking trails straight out to the sea. There are boat trips galore, and there are crabbers crabbing away in the harbour daily.”

Away from the water, Dartmouth is enveloped by the stunning greenery that frames the English countryside – with forests, hills and trails presenting an excellent opportunity for nature lovers to capture momentous photos.

For those looking to enjoy the serene environment, Dartmouth’s location lends itself to water-based adventures such as kayaking, paddle boarding, sailing, or cruising, making it an optimal spot to immerse oneself in the scenic views of this unique town.

Dartmouth Castle, dating back to the 1380s, has been a protector of the town for centuries, even housing military troops during World War Two.

Known for its stunning views of the town, the castle is an ideal spot for wildlife watching, learning about the town’s rich history, and enjoying homemade ice cream from the nearby castle tearooms.

The town centre exudes a charming historic atmosphere with its cobblestone streets, independent stores, art galleries, cafes, and the Dartmouth Museum.

For those travelling with children, the Woodlands Family Theme Park offers thrilling rides, a petting farm, a splash pool, and numerous events during the summer holidays.

No seaside holiday would be complete without fish and chips, a speciality of the town. The Rockfish, an award-winning seafood restaurant, offers both dine-in and takeaway options.

Another highly-rated establishment on Trip Advisor is the Wheelhouse Takeaway, where visitors have praised its “perfect dish and chips” and “fantastic gluten-free fish and chips batter”.

Dartmouth has been thrust into the spotlight thanks to Dame Agatha Christie, Britain’s queen of crime writing.

Her holiday home, Greenway House, sits elegantly by the River Dart and offers visitors a peek into her intriguing life through tours led by none other than Mathew Prichard, her very own grandson.

But if it’s a beach day you’re after, Dartmouth doesn’t disappoint. Not far away is Blackpool Sands, crowned the UK’s “most beautiful beach” in 2023 by CN Traveller, who lavished praise on its “almost reminiscent of Amalfi Coast” charm.

And let’s not forget Sugary Cove, Strete Gate, and Slapton Sands – each one a gem that promises a slice of seaside serenity.

Whatever your plans in Dartmouth, rest assured there’s a wealth of experiences waiting for those in search of the quintessential British seaside getaway.
