Four West Midlands Police Officers were rushed to hospital after they were attacked with a mystery substance in Tyburn, Birmingham, as a 38-year-old man was arrested
Several police officers were rushed to hospital after a mystery substance was sprayed on them during a call out over a small fire in Birmingham.
West Midlands Police had been responding to an incident in Tyburn at around 2.20am today after a man had barricaded himself in a property. When they arrived they found a small fire in a stairway of the block of flats and managed to douse it.
However seconds later an unknown liquid – believed to be ammonia – was sprayed at the four officers. A 38-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and assault on police officers and is currently in custody. The police officers were taken to hospital.
Superintendent Sam Batey, from Birmingham police, said: “Our main priority was to ensure the safety of residents and from body worn video we feel our officers displayed some serious bravery considering what they were presented with. They are being treated for their injuries and we are hopeful that they will make a full recovery.
“We have a man in custody and he will be questioned this morning and our enquiries are progressing.”
Rich Cook, chairman of the West Midlands POlice Federation said on X, formerly Twitter: “Thoughts are with four of our Birmingham based officers who were attacked with ammonia last night and ended up in the eye hospital as a result. Violence against police officers is relentless and completely uncalled for.”
