The bodies of two pensioners believed to be British have been discovered at a home in Costa Blanca, Spain, near the small town of San Fulgencio, as police launched an investigation

Two pensioners believed to be British have been found dead at a home in Costa Blanca, after laying undiscovered for several days.

The bodies of the man and woman, whose relationship is not yet clear, were found at around 3.30pm at the home near the small town of San Fulgencio, a 45-minute drive south of Alicante. Police have confirmed the grim discovery and said they are awaiting the results of a post-mortem.

A spokesman for the Civil Guard in Alicante said: “The Civil Guard was informed about 3.30pm today through the emergency 112 service about the discovery of the lifeless bodies of two people aged around 80. Firefighters were at the scene along with local police from San Fulgencio when we arrived.

“The Almoradi Territorial Judicial Police has taken charge of the initial investigations and a court in nearby Orihuela informed. The bodies have been transferred to Alicante’s Institute of Legal Medicine for the corresponding autopsy and full identification of both.”

Staff at a local council social services department raised the alarm after they failed to answer their calls and spotted part of a body lying on the floor inside the property. The bodies of the pair are believed to have laid undiscovered for several days.

Although the Civil Guard leading the investigation has not confirmed their nationalities pending their full identification, other sources confirmed local reports pointing to them British. It is understood both the man and woman suffered chronic illnesses and had been categorised by social services as “vulnerable.”

The area where they were living is on a residential estate which is extremely popular with foreign pensioners. The nearest urban area of San Fulgencio is around six miles inland from the Costa Blanca seaside town of Guardamar a short drive from Torrevieja.
