A woman has shared her incredible ‘home library’ she made by transforming one popular IKEA product.
The iconic retailer is known and loved for its wide range of budget-friendly homeware goods and furniture, with many people able to update and improve their homes for less with items from the Swedish brand.
One particularly popular product is its Billy bookcase. On IKEA’s website, the retailer penned: “It is estimated that every five seconds, one Billy bookcase is sold somewhere in the world. Pretty impressive considering we launched Billy in 1979. It’s the book lovers’ choice that never goes out of style.”
On social media, many people choose to share the ways in which they’ve styled their Billy bookcases, as well as other items like its famous Pax wardrobe systems.
One woman left people stunned with her Billy bookcase transformation. Available in a range of configurations and combinations, a Facebook user under the name Sarh Lm shared a series of photos to the public group, Show Your Home Library, which boasts more than 50K members all eager to share their bookshelves with the world.
Sarh opted for the corner Billy unit, but instead of leaving it in its original colour, she got creative with a tin of paint and transformed the shelving so it was a rich, dark shade of blue which perfectly matched the walls behind it.
The paint job helped make the bookcase become a seamless yet show-stopping feature of her home library. Sarh captioned the trio of images: “I painted an IKEA Billy corner dark blue for my room. I finished putting my books up today! I’m never leaving this place.”
The post resonated with fellow book lovers, who were enthralled by the transformation and the dramatic effect the painted shelving had on the room. In the comments section, one person simply said: “Goals.”
Another said: “This is dreamy” while a third enthused: “Your home library is absolutely beautiful!”
A fourth echoed such sentiments: “This looks amazing!” Someone else was inspired by the post and keen to update their own Billy system: “This is so tempting. I may have to purchase the Billy Bookcase extenders now. This looks so good!”
Another hadn’t thought to paint theirs but is now seriously considering it: “Never occurred to me to paint my Billy bookcases. I will have to think about colours once I’ve moved! Yours look great.”
And another person added: “Oh my gosh girl this is amazing! Absolutely amazing”.
According to IKEA’s product description, the Billy bookcase is designed with adjustable shelves so customers can adapt the space between to best suit their needs and desired appearance.
For units like Sarh’s, there are corner fittings to help ensure the bookcase remains in place. IKEA advises: “Different wall materials require different types of fixing devices. Use fixing devices suitable for the walls in your home, sold separately.”
