An investigation is under way after a pupil at a primary school in Dublin was injured in an attack on Tuesday – this is a breaking news story

An investigation is under way after a pupil at a primary school in Dublin, Ireland was injured in an attack today.

Police in north Dublin said the incident happened at the school and that two children, who both attend the school, were involved. The boy, who is believed to be 11, was taken to a hospital in Dublin with injuries reportedly to the neck that are believed to be non-life threatening.

Gardai, the Irish police force, say they are in contact with the parents of both children, reports DublinLive. “An Garda Siochana is currently liaising with school management and staff with a view to identifying the precise circumstances around the incident,” the police said in a statement.

They added: “Earlier today, Gardaí attended an incident that occurred at a primary school in North Dublin involving two children. Both children involved attend the school. One male child has been taken to a hospital in Dublin with injuries that are believed to be non-life threatening.”

The police also said that there is no concern for public safety following the incident. “An Garda Síochána will continue to engage with all relevant State agencies regarding this incident. There is no concern for public safety,” they went on.

Local Finglas TD Dessie Ellis told the Irish Mirror that he was shocked by the incident and described it as a “new low.” He said: “It’s a horrific thing and my sympathy goes out to the children injured and their families.

“We would consider school to be a safe place. We don’t know what sort of implement was used whether it was a knife or a makeup weapon, I don’t know. But one way or another it really is a new low. Schools are really a place where people should be protected.”
