Shaurya Kalidas Khandve, from India, was practising his cricket skills against a wall when the ball suddenly rebounded and hit him in the genital area – he collapsed and passed away
A child has tragically died after being hit in the groin by a cricket ball in front of his horrified friends in a freak accident during practice.
Shaurya Kalidas Khandve, believed to be 10 or 11, was practising his bowling skills when he was struck by the ball at the Jagad Guru Sports Academy in Pune, India on May 2. He sadly passed away shortly afterwards.
Harrowing footage showed the moments leading up to the accident when the boy was playing against a wall on the sports grounds. But things took a fatal turn when he bowled the solid ball and it quickly rebounded into his groin area. The 10-year-old suddenly fell to the ground before he hopped back up and brushed himself off. However, seconds later he collapsed again. His pals dashed over to him before administering CPR and carrying him off the court to get help.
Shaurya was rushed to a private hospital close by, but he was pronounced dead on arrival. Police spokesperson, Sachin Dhamane confirmed that an investigation into the boy’s death is underway. Officers are currently interviewing witnesses and awaiting the results of an autopsy. Shaurya, also known as Shambhu, was a sports lover who dreamed of becoming a professional wrestler. His death has left the local community in shock.
Earlier this year, a 52-year-old man passed away after he was hit by a cricket ball from another match. The businessman, named Jayesh Savla, sadly died from a head injury in the city of Mumbai in January. He was fielding for his team when he was struck by the ball from another match that was being played on the same ground, according to local media.
It was reported that several matches taking place on one ground is common in Mumbai. Senior police officer Deepak Chauhan said: “There were two matches taking place on the same ground, and while Savla was fielding for his team, a ball that was hit by a batsman from another match suddenly hit him on his head because he fell unconscious.”
Sachin Koli, who had been coaching his school team at the same ground, said the dad appeared to be in good shape, reports Mid-Day. He said: “What happened is very unfortunate. We immediately carried him and rushed to a nearby private hospital, but he was no more. Savla appeared to be quite a fit person.” He added: “local coaches have made it compulsory for young cricketers to wear helmets while fielding near any of the pitches here.”
