The most glamorous night in the TV calendar is officially back, as the National Television Awards have confirmed their return this September in a star-studded bash at The 02 London. Broadcast live on ITV and ITVX, the show will once again be helmed by The Masked Singer host Joel Dommett as the best and brightest stars from the across the TV industry do battle to take home one of the coveted awards.
Now, ahead of the all important ceremony, the NTAs have released their long-list of nominees and have called upon the public to help whittle down the potential award-winners ahead of the final round of public voting which is due to take place later this year.
Among the stars leading the nominations this year are Fool Me Once’s Michelle Keegan and One Day actor Leo Woodall who will both be going head to head as they duke it out to try and win the Best Drama performance award.
36 year old Michelle dominated screens earlier this year when she played Maya Stern in the nail biting thriller which was based on a novel by US author Harlan Coben. Within hours of releasing the series swiftly rose to the top of the viewing charts and as of the time of writing, has been viewed almost 100 million times around the world.
However, Michelle will also face some stiff competition from rival actor Leo, who captured the hearts of viewers everywhere while playing Dexter Mayhew in Netflix limited series One Day, inspired by David Nicholls hit novel of the same name.
Of course, it isn’t just drama that promises to be a tough category, as this year the candidates for Best Authored Documentary are also holding no punches, with footballing legend David Beckham and Wagatha Christie herself, Coleen Rooney, among the contenders hoping to secure victory.
David is nominated for his four part Netflix series Beckham, which offered a unique but intimate insight into his life away from the spotlight with wife Victoria. Following everything from romance to family life, the show even lifted the lid on David’s own experiences of living with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
Meanwhile, Coleen is in the running for her Disney+ show, The Real Wagatha Story, which charts her experience during the now infamous ‘Wagatha Christie’ case against Rebekah Vardy. Interestingly, Coleen will also go head to head with her husband Wayne in the same category this year, as he too is nominated for his own Prime Video documentary Rooney.
This year, viewers could also witness a clash between Time Lords in the Drama performance category as Doctor Who’s David Tennant takes on fellow Doctor Ncuti Gatwa in the hard fought category.
One category many fans will no doubt have their eye on is Best Presenter, which for the past 22 years had been dominated by TV legends Ant and Dec. Could Claudia Winkleman finally wrestle victory from them after captivating viewers on Strictly Come Dancing, The Traitors and The Piano this year?
Fifteen categories in total will make up the awards, with a further two: Special Recognition and Impact, due to be revealed on the night.
